Due to technical difficulties, and let’s be honest, procrastination I have not been posting as often as I would like. So with that lame opening sentence out of the way, let’s get on with what I really want to tell you about….
In 2011 our neighbors across the pond, the UK, launched a great idea; a night (or day) of spreading the love of reading by giving away thousands of books to light and non-readers across the UK, Ireland and Germany. With the support of publishers to print the books and an army of volunteers to give them away, a wonderful annual event began. In 2012, we here in the U.S. got involved and I’m happy to say the tradition will continue on April 23, 2013 (Shakespeare’s birthday).
Each country has their own panel of librarians and booksellers who choose the titles that will be given away in that particular year. Here in the U.S. 30 titles have been picked for 2013. Anyone can volunteer to become a ‘giver’ on the World Book Night website. If you are lucky enough to be chosen you will be given 20 copies of one title (hopefully one that you requested on your giver application) and have the fun of passing them out on April 23, 2013. Last year I didn’t apply because I was going to be out of town, but this year I applied right away and I’m hoping to become a giver. Fingers crossed!
